Essential Aftercare Guide
Getting a tattoo is an exciting experience, but proper aftercare is essential to ensure it heals beautifully and lasts a lifetime. The first few weeks are crucial, as your skin recovers from the tattooing process. Follow this guide to keep your new ink looking vibrant and infection-free.
1. The First 24 Hours: Immediate Care
Your tattoo artist will cover the tattoo with a protective bandage—leave it on for at least 2–4 hours to prevent infection.
Wash your hands before removing the bandage.
Gently clean your tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap. Avoid scrubbing.
Pat dry with a clean paper towel—never rub.
Apply a thin layer of tattoo-specific aftercare ointment (like Aquaphor or Hustle Butter).
2. The First Week: Healing Begins
Moisturize 2–3 times a day with a fragrance-free lotion. Avoid petroleum-based products.
Your tattoo may feel sore, swollen, or start to scab—this is normal. Do not pick or scratch!
Wear loose, breathable clothing to prevent irritation.
Avoid excessive sweating—skip the gym for a few days.
3. Weeks 2–4: Peeling and Itching
The tattoo may peel and flake like a sunburn—this is part of the healing process. Continue moisturizing.
Itching is common but don’t scratch! Tap the area gently if needed.
Avoid prolonged sun exposure and always apply SPF 30+ once the tattoo is healed.
Stay away from pools, hot tubs, and oceans until fully healed to prevent infections.
4. Long-Term Tattoo Care
Keep your tattoo moisturized to maintain vibrancy.
Use sunscreen (SPF 50) when exposing it to the sun.
Stay hydrated and maintain healthy skin for long-lasting ink.
By following these aftercare tips, you’ll ensure your tattoo heals properly and remains bold and beautiful for years to come. If you notice signs of infection (excessive redness, pus, or pain), consult a healthcare professional immediately.
